FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a PDF to Word for free?
Drop your PDF into the tool above, choose the Word format (.docx), then click "Convert & download". The conversion runs entirely in your browser, with no sign-up and no installation.
Is the formatting preserved during conversion?
Yes. The converter rebuilds the document structure: headings, paragraphs, bold, lists and page breaks are restored as native Word styles. That is what separates a real conversion from a simple copy-paste, where everything arrives as plain text.
How do I convert a scanned PDF or an image to Word?
A scanned document is only an image: there is nothing to extract without character recognition. Check "OCR (scanned PDF)", choose the document language, then start the conversion. The recognized text is inserted into Word as editable content.
What is the difference between .doc and .docx?
The .doc format is Word's old binary format, replaced since 2007 by .docx, based on an open XML package: lighter, more reliable and readable by other software. The file produced here opens in Word, LibreOffice Writer, Google Docs and all recent word processors.
Are my files sent to a server?
No. Reading the PDF, extracting the text, OCR and generating the Word file all happen entirely in your browser. No document is uploaded, stored or transmitted. That is what lets you handle contracts, payslips or client files without risk.
Is there a page or size limit?
The free version converts up to 10 pages at a time; Premium lifts this limit. File size is bounded by your browser's memory, with a cap of 80 MB per document. See the pricing.
Can I convert only certain pages?
Yes. Enter a range like "1-5, 8, 10-14" in the Pages field before starting the conversion: only those pages are carried over into the Word document. It is the fastest way to extract a chapter or an appendix from a large report.
Why is the text sometimes broken into short lines?
A PDF describes text positions, not paragraphs: each line is independent. The "Group paragraphs" option reassembles neighbouring lines into a single Word paragraph. Turn it off if you prefer to keep exactly the original line breaks.
How do I convert a Word document back to PDF?
Open the document in Word, then use File › Save As › PDF. To assemble several documents afterwards, our PDF merger and our PDF splitter take over — also entirely local.
Does the converted document stay editable?
Yes, that is exactly the point of the conversion. The result is a real .docx file: you can correct the text, change the styles, add images and rework the layout in your favourite word processor.
My PDF is protected, can I convert it?
A PDF that is simply "openable" but without print or copy permission is often still convertible. A document actually encrypted with a password cannot be read without it: the tool will tell you and ask you to unlock the file at its source.
How do I sign in to my account?
Click "Log in" and enter the email address of your subscription: you reach your Stripe portal to manage your subscription, invoices and payment details.
Can I cancel at any time?
Yes, cancel in one click from your account. The subscription stays active until the end of the paid period.

Convert a PDF to Word online: fast, local and free

Converting a PDF to Word means going from a frozen document to a working document. A PDF describes the exact appearance of each page: text sits at precise coordinates and nothing is meant to move. A Word file describes intent: a paragraph is a paragraph, a heading is a heading, and everything stays editable. The Volade converter builds that bridge right in your browser, with no software to install and no account to create.

In practice, the tool reads your document, spots the structure — font sizes, weight, alignment, spacing — and translates it into native Word styles. The result is not an image pasted into a document: it is an editable .docx, with real headings in the document outline, real paragraphs and bold that stays bold.

Why convert a PDF to Word instead of editing it directly?

You can open a PDF in a PDF editor and layer corrections on top, but you are then working at the surface: you move blocks, cover text, and break the layout as soon as you add one line too many. Whenever you need to rework a report, translate a contract, shorten an article or reformat a document for a bid, converting to Word is the only approach that leaves the content genuinely editable.

The second reason is purely logistical: most institutions, schools and companies ask for a Word file. A document sent as .docx can be reviewed, annotated, compared with the previous version and approved by several people — none of which is possible on a locked PDF.

What the conversion preserves, and what needs particular attention

Simple text documents convert almost perfectly: paragraphs, headings, lists, bold, italics and page breaks are faithfully rebuilt. The tricky cases are highly graphical layouts — narrow columns, complex tables, running footers — because a PDF does not say which content takes priority. That is exactly why the tool shows a preview of the extracted text before downloading: you see straight away whether the structure was understood correctly, and adjust the options accordingly.

The "Group paragraphs" option deserves a special mention. It reassembles lines that follow one another at regular intervals into a single paragraph, and stops as soon as a large vertical gap appears or a sentence ends. If your original PDF uses a column layout or widely spaced notes, turn it off to preserve the line breaks exactly.

OCR: convert a scanned PDF or an image to Word

A document scanned with a scanner, a photo of a contract or a PDF exported from an image contains no text: only pixels. No extractor can produce editable content from it without optical character recognition. Check the OCR option, choose the language — French, English, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Arabic, Russian, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean and more — and each image page is analysed locally before being re-injected as Word text.

This is the most common use case for archives: old contracts, scanned payslips, civil records, photographed test reports. Without OCR, these documents stay locked inside an image; with OCR, they become browsable, searchable and editable again.

100% local processing: why it really matters

Most online converters ask you to send your file, then store it while it is processed — often for hours, sometimes with no clear deletion policy. When it comes to a payslip, a medical record, an unsigned contract or a document covered by professional secrecy, that is out of the question. Here, no network request is made: the conversion runs in the tab, which also makes it instant, even offline once the page has loaded.

This way of working has a practical consequence too: no queue, no hidden daily quota, no watermark added to the document. What you see on screen is what the downloaded file contains.

Choose the page range before converting

There is no point converting a 200-page report just to recover chapter 4. Enter "4-9" in the Pages field and only those pages are processed. It is faster, it reduces the size of the output file, and it keeps elements you do not need out of your Word document — automatic tables of contents, cover pages or appendices that disrupt the numbering.

And after the conversion?

Once the .docx file is downloaded, open it in Word, LibreOffice Writer or Google Docs: the styles are native, so everything stays normally editable. To check the spelling and layout, our word counter gives you the exact volume of the reworked text; to start again from a clean PDF before sending, our tools to merge a PDF, split a PDF and compress a PDF complete the chain — all 100% local.
