FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How to convert an image to text for free?
Drop your image (JPG, PNG, WebP, TIFF or BMP) into the tool, choose the language then click "Extract text". The detected characters appear in the editor, ready to correct, copy or export as TXT, Markdown or HTML — no account, no upload and no limit.
Do my files leave my device?
No. Text extraction works entirely in your browser: your images and PDFs are never uploaded, stored or analyzed by a server. Recognition happens on-site, even when you're offline.
How to extract text from a scanned PDF?
Import your scanned PDF (multi-page): each page is rendered locally then submitted to optical character recognition. The text from all pages is gathered in the editor, in order, and can be exported as a single text file.
Why can't I select text in my PDF?
It's a scanned PDF: it contains only images, no native text. To recover the text, use OCR: drop the PDF into the tool, choose the language then extract. The scanned text becomes selectable and editable.
How to convert my photo to a Word document?
Extract the text from the photo with OCR, correct it in the built-in editor, then paste it into your Word document. TXT, Markdown or HTML export is also available depending on the format you want.
What formats can I analyze?
Common image formats (JPG, PNG, WebP, TIFF, BMP) and multi-page scanned PDFs. Images pasted with Ctrl+V are also supported. Extraction is 100% local in all cases.
What languages are supported?
17 languages: French, English, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Turkish, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Vietnamese and Arabic. Select the document language before extracting for better accuracy.
What is layout mode?
"Layout" mode analyzes the document structure (columns, blocks) to preserve text organization, while "Structured" outputs one paragraph per line and "Raw" extracts dense text. "Auto" mode lets the engine decide.
The text isn't perfect, why?
Accuracy depends on the sharpness and resolution of the image. Enable binarization or contrast for dull scans, choose the correct language, and correct the result in the editor using the displayed confidence score.
Can I convert handwriting to text?
This tool is optimized for printed and machine text (documents, articles, screenshots, scanned PDFs). For handwriting, specialized handwriting recognition solutions (AI) will give better results; our OCR is designed to process printed and typeset text.
Is there a usage limit?
None for essential use: OCR is free, no account, no waiting queue and no daily limit in your browser. Premium unlocks multi-file extraction and large batches.
How to copy the recognized text?
After extraction, the text appears in the editor. Click "Copy" to put it on the clipboard, or export it as .txt, .md or .html with one click.
How to paste an image directly?
Take a screenshot of the text then press Ctrl+V (or Cmd+V on Mac) on the page: the image is imported and ready to be analyzed, without downloading a file.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes, the tool is fully responsive. On a smartphone, take a photo of the document, import it, then extract the text. Processing remains local in all cases.
What is the best free online OCR?
The "best" depends on your needs. Volade stands out with its 100% local operation: no upload, complete privacy, free and unlimited, offline capable, multilingual and direct export. Ideal if the privacy of your documents matters.
Convert, extract, reuse

Extract text from an image or PDF, online and for free

A text extractor (or image-to-text converter) uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to transform the visible characters in an image or scanned document into editable digital text. Volade does all of this for free and 100 % locally: recognition runs directly in your browser through an embedded OCR engine, without your files ever being sent to a server.

This means three decisive advantages over most online OCR tools (iLovePDF, pdf2go, cardscanner, imagetotext...): your documents never leave your device, processing starts instantly with no queue, and it works even offline, with no account and no daily limit.

How to extract text from a photo?

Do you have a photo of a document, a screenshot, or an image that contains text? Drop the file (JPG, PNG, WebP, TIFF, BMP), choose the text language, then click "Extract text." The OCR reads the characters and displays them in an editor: you can then correct, copy the text, or export it as TXT, Markdown, or HTML. There is no upload, no sign-up, and no cost.

How to extract text from a scanned PDF?

A scanned PDF is a PDF that contains only images (no selectable text). Volade handles multi-page scanned PDFs: each page is rendered locally and then passed to optical character recognition, and all the texts are combined in the editor in order. You get a complete text document, exportable as a single file. Note that for a PDF that is already digital (native text), you can simply copy and paste the text, but our tool also gives you the OCR result in one click.

Convert an image to Word text

To convert an image or scan into a Word file, first extract the text with OCR, correct it in the built-in editor, then paste the result into your Word document. TXT, Markdown, and HTML export formats are also available if you prefer a plain text file, a structured document, or a web page.

Recognize text in multiple languages

The engine is multilingual: it recognizes French, English, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Turkish, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Vietnamese, and Arabic. Simply select the document language before extraction for better accuracy.

Improve extraction accuracy

OCR quality depends on the sharpness and resolution of the image. Volade offers preprocessing options to improve dull scans: binarization (black & white) which enhances the contrast of scanned documents, contrast enhancement for photos with strong lighting, and 90° rotation for documents photographed at an angle. Four extraction modes are available: Auto, Raw, Structured, and Layout.

Who is this text extractor for?

Students transcribing lecture notes into digital form, journalists digitizing articles, professionals recovering text from a scanned contract or invoice, developers capturing code, or anyone who simply wants to reuse the text from an image in a document. The tool stays simple and immediate: import, choose the language, extract, export.
