How to count the words in my text for free?

What is a character counter?
A character counter enumerates the symbols in a text, spaces included (or not). It's useful for respecting input limits on social media, forms or project proposal submissions. Volade displays characters with and without spaces in real time.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. The analysis is entirely local: your text is processed by your browser's engine and is never uploaded, stored or read by a server. You can even use it offline.
How many words make up a page or a sheet?
Generally, a standard A4 page with single spacing contains about 400 to 500 words, and a standard translation-format sheet (250 words) about 25 lines. These benchmarks vary by font, size and margins, but give a good order of magnitude for estimating the length of your writing.
How to calculate the reading time of a text?
Reading time is calculated by dividing the word count by an average reading speed (about 200 words per minute, adjustable). Reading aloud is slower (about 130 words per minute). Volade calculates both automatically based on the speed you choose.

What is the rule for counting words in English?
Each group of characters separated by a space counts as one word, including short words ("a", "the"), contractions ("don't") and numbers. Punctuation marks do not count as words. Our engine automatically applies these English rules.
