The slug is the visible vocabulary of your URL architecture: those few lowercase words, separated by hyphens, summarize the page for search engines as well as humans. The slug generator by Volade turns any title into a clean slug, with the options SEO expects — all without sending anything anywhere.
Lowercase only, words separated by hyphens, no special characters, between 3 and 6 words, and the main keyword as far left as possible. Avoid long dates, IDs and needless synonyms: how-to-create-a-blog ages better than how-to-create-a-blog-2026-revision-3. The generator applies these rules by default and lets you disable each bias for your case.
In UTF-8, accents work. In practice, they still run into old CMSs, CSV exports, keyboard shortcuts and encoding errors. The simple rule: remove accents from the slug (e instead of é), keep them in the content. The generator's option transliterates cleanly, including composed characters like ø, ß or ñ.
Google reads the hyphen as a space: it is the choice of the vast majority of modern sites, from WordPress to Shopify. The underscore is tolerated but less well segmented. For internal URLs, technical exports or team conventions, the generator switches in one click — the result stays valid either way.
Removing le, la, by, for, the lightens the URL without losing the meaning: « buying-guide-best-laptops » stays perfectly readable. However, watch out for words that change the meaning (« gluten-free », « non-nuclear »): in those cases, uncheck the option and keep the preposition. The stop word lists cover French, English, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch and Polish.
Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, Korean: Unicode slugs are accepted by Google, but they are shared less easily and can cause problems outside the browser. A common practice: transliterated Latin or English slug for the URL, native language for the title. The tool handles non-Latin alphabets without breaking them — Unicode normalization and truncation stay correct even without spaces.
Beyond 60 characters, URLs appear truncated in search results; beyond 70, the risk of a « hidden » URL becomes real. The generator cuts at the last full word under the chosen limit — never in the middle of a word. Prefer a flat URL as well: /my-article rather than /2026/10/category/sub/article.
You published, then changed your mind: set up a 301 redirect and watch Search Console for a few weeks. A stable slug is an SEO asset: fix it once and use the meta tag generator from Volade to complete the title tag and description. To fill a demo article, the Lorem Ipsum generator does the rest, and the character counter checks your titles before publishing.
