A complete counter for every network

23 platforms, posts and bios

X, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube, Threads, Bluesky, Mastodon, Pinterest, Reddit, Telegram, WhatsApp, Discord… Pick the platform and the field is pre-filled with its exact limit: post, caption, bio, headline or channel description.

Pick my platform

Live gauge right up to the limit

The progress bar fills as you type: green while there is headroom, orange as you approach the limit, red once you go over. The counter also shows how many characters you have left, or by how much you are over.

Try the gauge

X's rule: links = 23 characters

On X and Mastodon a 120-character URL only costs you 23 units, thanks to the built-in shortener. Turn the option on to match the network's exact tally, even with very long campaign links.

Enable the links option

Private: the count stays with you

The counting runs entirely in your browser: your text is never sent anywhere and is only kept in your device's local storage. Ideal for upcoming campaigns, unpublished posts or sensitive drafts.

How it works

Check a character limit in three steps

Paste your text

Your post, caption or bio in the input box — or load the sample to see the tool in action in a second. Counting starts with your first keystroke.

Pick the network and the field

Instagram caption, tweet, LinkedIn update, TikTok bio, YouTube description… The selector loads the right limit automatically, and the “links = 23” option turns on for X and Mastodon.

Read the gauge and adjust

The gauge shows the exact number of characters used, the characters left and the state (within the limit, nearly full, exceeded). Shorten or extend your text until it turns green.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the character counter

How do I count the characters in a text for free?
Paste your text into the tool's box above: the character count appears instantly, along with words, lines, hashtags and mentions. Then pick the platform you are targeting to compare the result with its exact limit. The tool is free, unlimited and requires no sign-up.
What is the character limit on X (Twitter)?
A standard post on X is limited to 280 characters on a free account (up to 25,000 with X Premium). Bios are limited to 160 characters. Links are always counted as 23 characters regardless of their real length, and emojis as well as Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters count as two.
How many characters for an Instagram post?
An Instagram caption accepts 2,200 characters, about 125 of them visible before the “more” link. The profile bio is limited to 150 characters and the displayed name to 30. For Reels, the caption remains 2,200 characters.
What are the limits on LinkedIn and Facebook?
LinkedIn allows 3,000 characters per post and comment, 220 for the headline and 2,600 for the About section. Facebook accepts up to 63,206 characters in a post, but only a short excerpt (about 477 characters in the feed) is shown before the “more” cut.
What are the limits on TikTok, Threads and Bluesky?
TikTok accepts a 4,000-character caption for a video and 80 in the bio. Threads is limited to 500 characters per post, and Bluesky to 300 — less than old Twitter. Instagram, Facebook and the other networks in the selector get the same one-click check.
Why does a link reduce the counter on X?
On X and Mastodon every published URL is counted as exactly 23 characters, whatever its real length: the network's built-in shortener applies. Tick the counter's “Links = 23 characters” option to get exactly X's tally, even with long links.
Do emojis and special characters count double?
It depends on the network. On X, emojis and Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters count as two units. On Threads and Bluesky, every visible character — emoji included — counts as one. Volade's counter shows the number of visible characters, and the links = 23 option applies X's rule.
Does the counter work on mobile, and is it private?
Yes: the interface adapts to small screens with the same counters and the same gauge. The tally runs entirely in your browser — your text is never sent anywhere and is only kept locally, making it suitable for campaign drafts or sensitive messages.
Social network limits

Character counter: 2026 limits for every network

Counting characters has become essential before any publishing: each network sets its own limit, and going over forces you to cut your message at the last moment — often in the worst place. The character counter of Volade checks your text against the exact limit of the target network, in real time and without an account, so you know exactly how many words, hashtags and links you can still add.

How many characters for a post on Instagram, X or LinkedIn?

Limits change every year and depend on the field you fill in (post, bio, headline, description). Here is an up-to-date overview of the main international platforms:

What X and Mastodon really count: links and emojis

The character count shown by X is not a simple length calculation. Every URL is counted as 23 characters, whatever its real length, because the network applies it through its internal shortener: a 180-character link therefore costs you only 23 units, while a short 15-character one costs 23. The emojis and Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters count as two units, while most other networks (Threads, Bluesky) count every visible character as one. The counter's “Links = 23 characters” option applies this rule automatically.

The character limit and the first screen

Going over the limit is not the only risk: truncated display cuts the message short. In the feed, Instagram shows little more than the first 125 characters before the “more” link, LinkedIn about 210, and Facebook a reduced text area. That is why community managers write the hook first, then check with the counter that the essentials fit on the first screen: the character counter gives the total, and writing the first line does the rest of the job.

Counting bios, headlines and descriptions

The most restrictive limits often hide in profiles: 160 characters of bio on X, 150 on Instagram, 80 on TikTok, 220 for the LinkedIn headline. A bio written beyond the limit is simply truncated or refused on save. Pick the matching field in the tool: the displayed limit changes, and you rewrite your profile until it fits.

How do I check a network's built-in counter?

Each platform shows its own counter as you approach the limit — X's famous “280 left”, or Instagram's progress ring. The catch: it only appears inside the input field once your text is already written, and it disappears if you copy the message elsewhere. Volade's counter gives you that result before you open the network, including to compare several drafts or prepare a message meant to be pasted across platforms.

Tip: write for the most restrictive platform

The same message is often published on several networks. Rather than writing three versions, start from the strictest limit (300 characters on Bluesky, 500 on Threads, 280 on X): if your text fits there, it will fit everywhere else — you will only need to lengthen it for networks that allow more room. Simply switch platform in the selector to see, in one click, how many characters you have left on each.

A free, private tool that works everywhere

The counter works on desktop and on mobile, with no installation or sign-up. The text you paste never leaves your browser : the calculation runs locally, and your last entry is only kept in your device's local storage so you can pick up where you left off. To complete your writing workflow, the word counter analyses your paragraph structure, and the related tools below take it from there.
