Frequently asked questions

Do my passwords leave my device?

No. All generation and analysis happen in your browser: the passwords you create or test are never uploaded, stored or analyzed by our servers. That's the tool's core guarantee.

Why not use Math.random()?

Math.random() is not designed for security: its results are predictable. Volade uses crypto.getRandomValues(), a cryptographically secure random number generator, so that every character is truly unpredictable and impossible to guess.

What is a password's entropy?

Entropy measures a password's uncertainty, expressed in bits. Each bit doubles the number of combinations and the time needed to find it. A 20-character password with uppercase, lowercase, digits and symbols often exceeds 120 bits — that is billions upon billions of years to crack by brute force.

Is a long but readable password safe?

Yes, provided it is random. A passphrase of 5 words drawn at random from a large vocabulary offers high entropy while staying easy to remember. A predictable "human" password (date, first name, dictionary word) remains weak, whatever its length.

How long should my passwords be?

Length matters more than complexity. We recommend at least 16 characters for everyday accounts and 20 or more for sensitive accounts (main email, bank, administration). For passphrases, aim for 5 to 7 words.

Should I change a weak password found by the tester?

Yes. If the tester flags a common password, a sequence, a year or a keyboard sequence, replace it immediately with a randomly generated password. Attackers prioritize these widely used combinations.

What is a "pattern" to avoid?

These are the structures attackers test first: dictionary words and their variants (p@ssw0rd), numeric sequences (123456), keyboard sequences (qwerty, azerty), years, repetitions (000000) or repeated patterns (121212). The tester detects and flags them.

How do I create a good Wi-Fi password?

For a home or business network, choose the "Wi-Fi" preset: a random password of at least 16 characters mixing uppercase, lowercase, digits and symbols. Avoid using your first name or phone number.

What does the cracking time estimate mean?

It's a theoretical estimate of how long a very powerful machine (10 billion attempts per second) would take to find your password by brute force. It's an instructive order of magnitude, not a guarantee: it doesn't include adaptive dictionary attacks.

Is the generator free and unlimited?

Yes. Generation, batch generation (up to 100) and the tester are entirely free and unlimited, without sign-up. Only the wider Volade ecosystem (encrypted history, multi-account audit) is Premium.

How do I generate several passwords at once?

Switch to the "Batch" view: choose the count (1 to 100) and the length, then click Generate batch. You can then copy everything or export as TXT, CSV or JSON to create many accounts in one go.

Which export formats are available?

TXT (one password per line), CSV (compatible with spreadsheets and manager imports) and JSON (for automated integration). The export happens in your browser, with no network transfer, and is available free of charge.

Is a 6-digit PIN secure?

A random 6-digit PIN has one million combinations: that's reasonable for unlocking a phone or an app with an attempt limit. Use at least 6 digits, and avoid sequences (123456) and repetitions (111111) — which our generator does automatically if you tick the options.

What if a site requires specific characters?

Use the "Minimum requirements" fields to force at least X digits, symbols, uppercase or lowercase, or enter custom characters to include. The generator automatically respects the site's constraints while staying random.

Why avoid ambiguous characters?

Ambiguous characters (O/0, I/l/1, S/5, B/8) look alike and cause typing or copy errors. The "Avoid ambiguous characters" option removes them to produce passwords that are more reliable by eye and by hand, with virtually no loss of entropy.

In which language are passphrases generated?

Seven vocabulary languages are available: French, English, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese and Dutch. Choose the language that feels most natural to you, because a phrase you understand is easier to remember.

How do I test the strength of an existing password?

Open the "Tester" tab and enter the password. You get a score out of 100, an entropy in bits, an estimated cracking time and a list of the bad patterns detected. The analysis is 100% local and confidential.

Is the generator also suitable for account deployment?

Yes. Batch generation (up to 100 passwords) with CSV or JSON export is ideal for creating many user accounts, server roles or temporary credentials, without any data being sent over a network.

Where should I keep my generated passwords?

In an encrypted password manager (Bitwarden, 1Password, Proton Pass, Dashlane, KeePass…) and not in a notebook, an unencrypted text file or a message. The generator creates the password, the manager protects it.
