Which symbologies are available?

What's the difference between EAN-13 and Code 128?
EAN-13 is a numeric-only format for retail products (GTIN); it is more compact but only accepts digits. Code 128 accepts letters, digits and symbols with variable length — ideal for logistics, internal marking and shipment identification.
Do I need an official GTIN number?
To sell a product indexed in stores, yes: the EAN must match an official GTIN assigned by GS1 (through your supplier or a membership). The tool checks the check digit, but the commercial assignment of the number remains your responsibility. For internal use (inventory, traceability), Code 128 or Data Matrix are enough.
Why is my value rejected?
Each symbology accepts a specific character set and length: numeric formats (EAN, UPC, ITF-14…) only accept digits, and the check digit must match. Read the hint under the field: it states the exact rule and the expected number of digits.
What is GS1 mode?
The GS1 standard structures identification data (GTIN, lot, serial, dates) using application identifiers, e.g. (01)09501101530003. GS1-128, GS1 DataBar and GS1 Data Matrix barcodes use a parenthesized notation that the tool interprets automatically.
What download formats?
PNG for the web and everyday printing (up to 2400 px wide), SVG for perfect vector quality at any scale, and PDF for a print-ready document. You can also copy the image straight to the clipboard.
How do I print good labels?
Prefer the vector format (SVG) or a PNG with maximum contrast: dark bars on white background, a generous quiet zone (medium to large) and a bar height matched to your scanner. Most readers recommend a minimum of 300 dpi at the desired print size.
Can I generate several codes at once?
Yes, with the Premium plan: the "Batch generation" tab assembles a PDF label sheet locally from a list of values, one per page, ready to print. See pricing.
Can I scan a code with the camera?
Yes, the "Scanner" tab reads an existing code via the camera (browsers that support automatic detection). The detected code is reloaded in the tool with the matching symbology. No image is sent online.
Is there a length limit?
It depends on the symbology: a QR Code can hold up to 2953 bytes, a Data Matrix about 2335 alphanumeric characters, a PDF417 about 2710 bytes. Linear formats (Code 128, Code 39…) have smaller capacities but are enough for most uses.
Are my codes stored anywhere?
Only on your device: the "History" tab keeps your latest codes in local storage (IndexedDB) so you can find them quickly. Nothing is sent to a server, and you can clear the history at any time.
Which background colors should be avoided?
A barcode relies on contrast: dark bars on a light background scan best. Avoid colors too close between bars and background, shiny or reflective backgrounds, and keep a clear margin (quiet zone) around the code.
